We were asked to help Maitland Investment Management locate a new Head of Business Planning to be based on the Isle of Man. They had been searching for a suitable candidate for several months prior to FSR International's engagement. Furthermore, they had used an Isle of Man recruiter and a number of mainland UK recruiters to try to solve the issue for them; none of these firms was successful.
Full Details...
The Isle of Man is not one of the easier places to recruit globally, despite it’s attractive tax status and the high quality of life of its residents. However, Maitland benefited from the extent and reach of our network and we managed to find someone who was a Manx resident but was working in mainland UK.? Under our bespoke retained recruitment project management service, we organised the search thus:
- Our understanding of Client Requirements,
- Our understanding Maitland and its current and future strategic challenges
- Review of Maitland’s current issues and the specific need for the role
- Drafting of the role, responsibipties and reward package
- Commencing the search process by leveraging our exceptional network within the investment management industry alongside targeted advertising
- Development of initial long-pst of candidates
- Reviewing, vetting and pre-screening potential candidates
- Soft referencing of potential candidates and initial, pre-client interviews
- Client interview schedupng through to final offer to candidate
- Candidate management from resignation to acceptance and induction
All of this process was supported by our bespoke Weekly Progress Reporting system and communication protocol.
A key part of the search was understanding the client’s requirements, their current issues and the future projects and challenges that the new role would have to tackle. This was done during on-site visits to the Isle of Man and also to Maitland's HQ in South Africa.
We approached the candidate search from two angles - one was leveraging our existing network of contacts in the investment management industry and the other was to advertise the role in selected publications. Both proved to be valid sources of candidates, though as we often find, our own network was the source of the final short list of candidates. From that short-list one candidate was selected.
Following the successful placement, we received this feedback from Maitland Senior Management:
1. The recruitment process. How do you think we managed this? Consider how we developed the initial brief, timelines, communication, reporting, candidate liaison, etc
Maitland response: This was well managed - speaking to the functional head in South Africa before going to IOM to meet HR & Operations was a good move in helping to understand requirements and cement the relationship. Reporting and visibility of progress throughout the process was very good. It was great that I was able to update the Steering Group on a regular basis to help keep focus.
The candidates FSR International presented were of a high calibre and had a good fit with the role requirements. Communication was appropriate, and you assisted us by giving us a gentle reminder when you required feedback.
b. Candidates. What were your thoughts on the relevance and quality of our candidates?
Maitland response: Candidates presented to us were relevant and of high quality. The short-list of six potential candidates could all have performed the role; your advice and guidance along with our feedback helped ensure we made the correct selection.
c. Overall impression. How do you feel about our approach to tackling your recruitment project? Good points and ideas for improvement please.
Maitland response: Very good! The recruitment process was floundering before FSR International were involved. Once you got stuck into the project, it was well managed and we did not interview any non FSR International candidates. I don’t have any specific ideas for improvement that come to mind. For your information Mervyn [our candidate] has settled into his new role well and there has already been positive feedback on the quality of his work and output produced to the point where we have ‘seconded’ him onto one of the main projects in the Vision Programme. This is a chunky, enterprise-wide project, which will provide him with a good challenge, and we will be working closely over the course of the next few months.
We will definitely be using FSR International for future requirements - very happy with the service.
